There was a side A AND a side B…
Before Spotify and Pandora. Before iTunes and iPods. Before Limewire and Napster. Before CDs and mix CDs. There were cassette tapes.
If you’re unfamiliar, a cassette tape is a recording format popular in the late 1970s through the early 1990s, with a rectangular shape measuring 2.5 inches tall and 3.96 inches long. It was how people listened to music before the Compact Disc or CD.
If you watched 13 Reasons Why on Netflix, cassette tapes were what girl used for her suicide note!
That’s not just for the show! Real people used to use cassette tapes all the time!
If you’re more of a visual person here are 10 cassette tapes that might refresh your memory.
1. A Mix Tape
This was a Spotify playlist before Spotify. Only problem, if you grow to hate a song on here, you couldn’t delete it, you’d just have to skip the track every time.
2. Beatles Greatest Hits
This was probably playing in Mom’s minivan as you’d twist and shout from the middle seat asking if you’re there yet. (You’re not, the road trip just started).
3. 4 Non Blondes
Side B was some weird song with a train. Side A is super catchy and probably now stuck in your head.
4. Bruce Springsteen
The Boss! Nothing pumps you up more than this track!
Do you smell that? It’s teen spirit.
Dare you to play this tape and not dance.
Do you know the Hanson brothers now have a beer company called Mmmhops?! Yeah not a joke!
8. Michael Jackson
Must play at full volume while moonwalking around your bedroom.
Just like a prayer, this cassette will take you there.
It’s not Wonderwall, but it’ll have to do.
There you have it. Now do you remember cassette tapes?!
